My Rose ancestral line has three generations of men named Joseph Rose. Because they lived in New York City and northern New Jersey in the late 18th century and well into the 19th century, where records may not have been easily viewed and analyzed in the past, they have been conflated in various reports. They also tended to name their children the same names, generation after generation.
The immigrant Joseph Rose, believed to be born in England about 1735, lived in Manhattan, New York, and died February 28, 1807. He is buried in Trinity Churchyard, a historic graveyard now in the financial district of Manhattan. See his FindAGrave memorial. His wife, Barbara Egbertse (or Egburson) predeceased him on April 13, 1806. She is buried next to her husband and also has a FindAGrave memorial.

They had seven children, mentioned in their father's will: Mary, Joseph, William Lucius, Isaac, Ann, Samuel, and Elizabeth.

Their son, Joseph Rose (Jr) was born in 1770 in New York. He married Frances Stanton in the fall of 1797.

They had ten children. When one child died young, they would name a later child with the same name!

On Sunday, Nov. 21st, at Matteawan, near Middletown Point, N.J., Mr. JOSEPH ROSE, aged 84 years, formerly merchant of this city.I think I've found him in the 1840 US census in Middletown, but I need to delve into land records to confirm that it's the same Joseph Rose.

Joseph Stanton Rose was born in 1809 and I have blogged about him a few times: He married Frances Stanton Willet in October 1827, and was a Gunsmith in New York City in 1850. He fathered six children:
Frances Adelaide Rose (1829-1870) who married David Hunter McAlpin
Josephine Rose (1832-1920) who married Martin Ryerson Dennis
Joseph A. Rose (1835-1905) who married Annie Page
George Lodowick Rose (1837-1922) who married Mary Dayton
William Rose (1840-1920) who married Alma Mabel Anderson
Cordelia Maria Rose (1845-1927) who married first Judson Gale Shackelton and later married her brother-in-law, David Hunter McAlpin, as his third wife.
Joseph Stanton Rose's obituary is in the Matawan Journal and I shared it at Joseph Rose (1809-1877). He is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Matawan, which I visited in 2013.
