Maine Marriages, 1771-1907, FamilySearch |
My second great-grandparents, Henry C. Copeland and Sarah Lowell, both of Calais, Maine, were married on Wednesday, December 15, 1858. They submitted their intention to marry with the city clerk on December 9. (By the way, the City Clerk's name is Samuel Lambe; it took some creativity to confirm that signature.)
Calais, Washington County, Maine, is one of the northernmost locations in my family tree. It is 330 miles from Boston, a long way to travel in the mid-19th century.

Henry and Sarah had three children: Charles (1860-1952), Lowell (1862-1935) and Sarah Katherine (1874-1924). They continued to live in Calais until Henry's death, after which Sarah moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where her daughter and oldest son lived.
Henry and Sarah were married for almost 54 years, until Henry died in 1912. See Henry's obituary and photographs of Sarah with her cat in about 1910.
A fellow geneablogger, Linda Stufflebean, who blogs at Empty Branches on the Family Tree, and who also has ancestors in Calais, Maine, recently reported that the local newspaper, The Calais Advertiser, will hopefully be digitized soon. Then I should be able to find out a lot more about the Copeland family in Calais.
I have shared many wedding posts since I have been blogging using the Wedding Wednesday label.
I descend from Henry Clay Copeland and Sarah Lowell as follows:
This week's theme is Love and Marriage.
