Noah was not yet 18 years old when he initially enlisted in July 1778 in Captain Daniel Tilden's Company of Colonel Samuel McClellan's Regiment of Connecticut State Troops, which provided additional manpower when Continental enlistments proved insufficient. He arrived in camp on July 1, 1778, and served for at least two months that summer in the Hudson River Valley area where the Continental Army had moved after the Battle of Monmouth in June 1778.
