Libby: Least Number of Cousins ~ 52 Ancestors #40

My paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Adsit, known as Libby, is the grandparent with the least number of close family, specifically first cousins. I have no first cousins, second cousins, or third cousins on this specific ancestral line. I showed this graphically at  Descendants of my Great-Grandparents and in a list at Counting Third Cousins.

Elizabeth Adsit, circa 1913, about 16 years old

Libby's paternal grandparents, James Monroe Adsit (1809 - 1894) and Susan Arville Chapin (1820 - 1906), had seven children, Libby's "Chicago" aunts and uncles:

  1. Leonard D. Adsit (January 31, 1842, Chicago - April 8, 1880, Chicago) - never married
  2. Isabella (Belle) F. Adsit (September 8, 1844, Chicago - September 3, 1916, Chicago) - married Ezra I. Wheeler (1838-1885) and had one daughter, Florence Wheeler. This cousin was born in May 1878 and died before her fifth birthday in March 1883 of "Acute gastritis." She is buried with her family in Graceland Cemetery in Chicago.
  3. James Monroe Adsit, Jr. (April 7, 1847, Chicago - March 30, 1926, Chicago) - never married. Worked in banking and real estate in Chicago.
  4. Carolyn Jane ("Carrie") Adsit (January 29, 1850, Chicago - May 6, 1922, Chicago) - never married. Died after being struck by an automobile.
  5. Charles Chapin Adsit (July 14, 1853, Chicago - July 3, 1931, Atlantic City, NJ) - Libby's father.
  6. Frank S. Adsit (September 7, 1855, Chicago - April 7, 1859, Chicago) - died young.
  7. Jeanie M. Adsit (December 19, 1860, Chicago - August 17, 1939, Chicago) - never married. She was the last of her generation to be buried in the Adsit plot at Graceland Cemetery.

Libby's maternal grandparents, Daniel Morgan Ashby (1828-1907) and Mary Elizabeth Gorin (1833-1891), had six children, Libby's "Kentucky" aunts and uncles (though several moved to and are buried in Chicago):

  1. Laura Gorin Ashby (January 26, 1858, Glasgow, KY - July 8, 1939, Chicago)  - married Junius J. Smith (1847-1893) and had one son, Ashby Smith. He was born in December 1887 and died died at two months old in February 1888. He is remembered with a gravestone at Rosehill Cemetery.
  2. Thomas Jefferson Ashby (1859, Kentucky - ????) - I have not had luck identifying what happened to him.
  3. Stephen Ashby (October 15, 1861, Glasgow, KY - after January 1881) - Last I know, he was at the Naval Academy.
  4. Mary Bowman Ashby (April 9, 1863, Glasgow, KY - September 12, 1956, Beverly, MA) - Libby's mother.
  5. Daniel Morgan Ashby Jr. (1866, Kentucky - July 4, 1904, Chicago) - never married. Was living in Chicago by 1887. He is buried in the Ashby family plot at Rosehill Cemetery.
  6. Turner Ashby (October 14, 1868, Glasgow, KY - December 22, 1934, Chicago) - was living in Chicago by 1887. He is buried in the Ashby family plot at Rosehill Cemetery, but with no indication of a wife or children, though the news story below does indicate that he was married.

From the July 27, 1917, Chicago Tribune

Libby's only known first cousins, Florence Wheeler (1878-1883) and Ashby Smith (1887-1888), both died years before she was born in June 1897. She and her brother, Charles, must have been doted upon by these many aunts and uncles as the only children in the next generation.

I descend from Charles Chapin Adsit and Mary Bowman Ashby as follows.
