Favorite Photo: Joseph May

One of my favorite photos in my collection is a photo of a painting.

Colonel Joseph May
great great grandfather

He was the great great grandfather of my maternal grandfather, Lowell Townsend Copeland (who has many New England ancestors). This makes him my 4th great grandfather.

I wish I knew whose handwriting it was, but perhaps it was Grandfather's mother's handwriting, since this was her great grandfather.

If you go to the Louisa May Alcott house (Orchard House) in Concord, Massachusetts, you'll see a painting of Joseph May who was her maternal grandfather. I have had the opportunity to visit Orchard House twice in recent years; it's a wonderful step into history. See their photo gallery on their website, scroll down to Parents' Room Gallery, and you'll see what is likely the original painting from which this image was created.

More about my May ancestral line can be found at Surname Saturday: May of England and Boston and more about Joseph May can be found at Close to Home: Joseph May of Boston. I have also written about Louisa May Alcott, my first cousin 4 times removed.

I descend from Joseph May as follows. (His grandson, Samuel Sewall Greeley married his great granddaughter, Eliza May Wells.)

Joseph May = Dorothy Sewall
