Susan Rood's Parents ~ Part 4 ~ 1830 and 1831 Records

Oliver Rood, married in 1797 to Lovina Munger in Massachusetts, was clearly living in Oneida County, New York between 1800 and 1820. He was still there, in Sangerfield, in 1830.

Oliver's household is the fourth line down from the top. It included: 

1 male age 50-60 (Oliver)
2 females age 5-10 (likely two young daughters)
1 female age 15-20 (likely an older daughter)
1 female age 50-60 (probable wife, Lovina)

The ages of the family members in the census records from 1800 to 1830 suggest a family with one or two sons and six or seven daughters. The oldest child was Susan, born in 1799 and the youngest likely child (a daughter according to this census) was born as late as 1824 or 1825.

The relatively new Full Text Search feature at FamilySearch has been a wonderful resource for all genealogists. Searching for Lovina Rude provided me with the following record (which I never would have found without it). 

"Cemetery church and town records," Daughters of the American Revolution (Oneida Chapter, New York), 1966-1967, from A History of the Hanover Society (Congregational), vol. 290, page 63, Lovina Rude, parent of 2 children, 1831; imaged in FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSS9-JQG8-1?view=explore : 28 August 2025); DGS 007815143, image 282 of 1160. 

In 1831, Lovina Rude was the parent of two pupils in the school district that included the town of Sangerfield. (Note that there is also a Munger on this list, a probable relative; Lovina's maiden name was Munger.) The 1830 census record for the Oliver Rood household included two young girls, very likely the children suggested in this school list.

Almost all of the parents listed were men, suggesting that it was more common to identify the father than the mother of the school children in these lists. Since Lovina was listed as the parent instead of Oliver, he probably died between when the census was taken or or about June 1, 1830, and when this school record was created sometime in 1831. (I suppose it's possible he deserted the family, but I have found no record of him anywhere after this date.)

Their oldest child, Susan (Rood) Chapin, was presumably living with her husband and children in Hartford in 1830 and was in Chicago by 1840. (See Orramel Chapin, Boardinghouse Keeper.)

I wasn't able to find the Rood family in 1840, but the 1840 federal census named only the heads of household and it was likely that Lovina was living with one of her daughters, especially if Oliver had died.
