Wedding Wednesday ~ Gordon Pyle and Zene Montgomery

The wedding announcement from the October 15, 1926 New York Times for my great uncle Gordon Pyle and his bride, Zene Montgomery. (Courtesy GenealogyBank.)

My grandfather, Charles Pyle, was his best man and the guests included four of Gordon's five siblings:
James McAlpin Pyle (and his wife), David Pyle (and his wife), Sara Smart (and her husband), and my grandparents, Charles and Elizabeth Pyle. I have not done much research on the Montgomery family, but it looks like two of Zene's brothers were in attendance.

  1. Elizabeth, you're so lucky to find a high level of detail in this announcement! I've had good success finding small "marriage" announcements in the NY Times archives, but nothing as chock-full of names as this.

    1. Marian, I think there is more of a story behind this wedding as the couple were of different religions so I was pleased to even find this notice.

      Thanks for reading and commenting!

  2. Awesome article, Elizabeth-- it's fairly unusual to find a marriage announcement with so much detail! My first thought was that Zene was high society or something-- but yes, back then people of different religions marrying was unusual. My Irish Catholic grandmother and Russian Jewish grandfather must have been REALLY counter-cultural back in 1933...

    1. Karen, I know the Pyle family was of the upper class in NYC at the time, and I don't know how Gordon met his bride, Zene. I know at the time that for a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant (i.e. WASP) to marry a Catholic was frowned upon, but I would guess that love won out for this couple.

  3. I'm so grateful to you cousin, as Zene III, to learn of these stories that have been forever lost to me since the passing of Granny and Mum so long ago. I have recently come across years of letters between Granny and Grandfather Gordon. Perhaps someday we can sit and share :) xo, Zene III
