I have shared the steps I took to identify Oliver Rood and Lovina (Munger) Rood as the parents of Susan (Rood) Chapin (born in 1799) and Harriet (Rood) Rose (born about 1824) using Chapin family genealogies, a 1797 marriage record, several census records and Lovina's burial records.
I had theorized that there were several other potential daughters of Oliver and Lovina, and the proof finally came in the probate record for one of the sisters who died a childless widow.
Philena Wilson died in November 1893 and her will was probated in early 1894. The information about the will was published in a newspaper in order to notify family members.

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF New York—To Harriet S. Rose, Ellen L. Howlett, William Barnes, Charles Leonard, George Barnes and Leonard Barnes, severally of Syracuse, New York, Charlotte Woodworth of Trumbull, Ohio, Oliver D. Lyon of Towanda, Pennsylvania, Susan Lavina Hoyt of Ithaca, New York, Jane E. Harrison of Salt Lake City, Utah, Arvilla Adsit of Chicago, Illinois, James L. Bagg, sojourning at Daytona, Florida, and the children and descendants of Oliver Rude, a deceased brother of the decedent hereinafter named, whose several names and places of residence are unknown and cannot after diligent inquiry for that purpose be ascertained, legatees, devisees, heirs at law and next of kin of Philena Wilson, late of the town of Geddes, in the County of Onondaga, New York, deceased, greeting:
Whereas Hulbert D. Rose, one of the executors named in a certain instrument in writing, purporting to be the last will and testament of said Philena Wilson, late of the town of Geddes, in the County of Onondaga, and State of New York, deceased, and relating to both real and personal estate, has lately made application to the Surrogate’s Court of our County of Onondaga, to have said instrument in writing proved and recorded as a will of real and personal estate; You and each of you are, therefore, hereby cited to appear before the Surrogate of the County of Onondaga, at his office in the City of Syracuse, in the said County of Onondaga, New York, on the 27th day of March, 1894, at ten o’clock in the forenoon of that day, then and there to attend the probate of said will and codicil thereto.
And if any of the aforesaid persons are under the age of twenty-one years, they will please take notice that they are required to appear by their general Guardian, if they have one, and if they have none, that they appear and apply for the appointment of a special Guardian, or in the event of their neglect or failure to do so, a special Guardian will be appointed by the Surrogate to represent and act for them in the proceeding for the probate of said will.
In testimony whereof, we have caused the seal of Office of our said Surrogate to be hereunto affixed. Witness, Edgar P. The petition of Hulbert D. Rose, of the City of Syracuse, in the County of Onondaga, New York, respectfully shows, that Philena Wilson, died on or about the 30th day of November, A.D. 1893, a natural death, being, at or immediately previous to the time of her death, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the town of Geddes in said County of Onondaga; That the said deceased left no husband her surviving benefic[iaries] the following persons, her only heirs-at-law and next of kin, viz:
Harriet S. Rose of Syracuse, New York and Charlotte Woodworth of Ashtabula, Ohio, sisters of said decedent; Ellen L. Howlett a child of Maria Leonard a deceased sister of decedent; William Barnes, George Barnes & Leonard Barnes, children of Lillie P. Barnes, a deceased child of said Maria Leonard, severally of Syracuse, New York;

That your petitioner has diligently made inquiry among the relatives above mentioned to ascertain the names and residences of the descendants of said Oliver Rude but has been unable to obtain the names or residences of a single one.
That the only persons named or designated in the last will and testament of said deceased and codicil thereto, hereinafter mentioned, as legatees, devisees, executors or trustees are said Ellen L. Howlett, Jane E. Harrison, Susan Lavinia Hoyt, William Barnes, George Barnes, Leonard Barnes and Oliver D. Lyon, aforesaid and Lillie P. Barnes who died prior to the death of said decedent as legatees and devisees, and Charles Leonard, James L. Bagg and your petitioner severally of Syracuse, N.Y. and of full age the executors herein named
That no petition for the probate of the last will and testament of said Philena Wilson, deceased, hereinafter mentioned and referred to, or any will of said deceased, has been filed in any Surrogate’s Court of the State of New York. That the estate and effects of which the said deceased died, seized or possessed, do not exceed in value as follows, to-wit: Real Estate, $none
Personal Estate, $7,500. That said Philena Wilson, deceased, left an instrument in writing purporting to be her last will and testament, bearing date the 10th day of January A.D. 1890 and also a codicil there,
The second page notes that the codicil was dated 9 September 1891, and the executors were Charles Leonard and James L. Bagg.
Named siblings of Philena Wilson included Harriet S. Rose, Charlotte Woodworth, Maria Leonard, Mary Lyon, Susan Chapin, and Oliver Rude.
BINGO! This probate record for a widowed, childless sister is the key to confirming the children of Oliver and Lovina (Munger) Rude/Rood. Additional research into these women support the evidence presented in this probate record proving the siblings.
Research on Oliver Rude, the brother, is ongoing.
